Understanding Your Teeth
Beyond the Surface

Some dental problems stay hidden from view. An examination tells us a great deal, but X-rays can reveal details between your teeth and beneath the gums that we cannot see simply by looking in your mouth.

A panoramic OPG brings your upper and lower teeth and jaws together in one image. When a broader view is needed, it helps your dentist understand how everything sits together and plan your next steps.

At Phoenix Medical, we choose imaging to suit your individual needs, then talk you through the findings—so you understand what we see and what it means for your care.

What Can Dental X-rays Show?

Dental X-rays help us look beyond what is visible during an examination—from decay between teeth to changes around the roots and supporting bone. A panoramic OPG gives us a wider view of your teeth and jaws.

Your Dental X-ray & OPG Questions Answered

Wondering why an X-ray or OPG is needed or what to expect? Here are a few helpful answers before your visit to Phoenix Medical.

Your dentist may recommend an OPG when a wider view of your teeth and jaws would help—for example, to assess wisdom teeth, investigate certain dental concerns or support orthodontic treatment planning. It isn’t needed at every check-up: we choose the imaging according to your examination, symptoms and treatment needs.

Dental X-rays use a small amount of radiation. We recommend them only when the information they provide is expected to benefit your care, and keep exposure as low as reasonably practicable. Tell your dentist if you are pregnant or might be, and mention any recent dental X-rays so these can be considered.

There is usually no special preparation. We may ask you to remove glasses, earrings, necklaces and removable dental appliances that could affect the image. Our team will help position you and explain what to do. You simply remain still while the imaging arm moves around your head.

They provide different views. An OPG shows your upper and lower teeth and jaws together, while small dental X-rays give a more detailed view of a particular area. Depending on what we need to assess, your dentist may recommend one type or a combination. An OPG is a two-dimensional image, rather than a 3D scan.
