WHY EARLY ASSESSMENT MATTERS

Small changes can be easier to manage when identified early

Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) describes a hip joint that has not developed normally. It can range from a shallow socket to an unstable or dislocated hip. Babies may not appear uncomfortable, which is why examination and, when appropriate, ultrasound are important.

Ultrasound creates a real-time picture of the developing joint. When DDH is identified early, a specialist can advise on monitoring or treatment while the hip is still developing. Not every finding needs treatment.

WHEN A SCAN MAY BE CONSIDERED

Recognised risk factors, clinical concerns or an additional private assessment

In England, every baby is offered physical hip screening. Ultrasound is normally targeted rather than routinely offered to every baby.

  • Breech presentation late in pregnancy, including after a successful turn.
  • A close family history of a hip condition beginning in babyhood or early childhood that needed treatment.
  • A concern identified during examination, such as possible instability or restricted movement.
  • A wish to discuss an additional private assessment and whether ultrasound is clinically appropriate.

Dr Marek Zelinski

Doctor in Orthopaedics and Musculoskeletal Medicine

Dr Zelinski provides orthopaedic care for adults and children and has extensive experience of ultrasound assessment of the hip joints in newborns and infants. Baby hip ultrasound has long formed part of preventive orthopaedic practice in several European healthcare systems.

At Phoenix Medical, the scan is not treated as an isolated image. It is combined with a musculoskeletal examination, including assessment of the feet, so the findings can be understood in the context of your baby’s development.

YOUR APPOINTMENT

Gentle, careful and clearly explained

1. Clinical examination

The doctor reviews relevant pregnancy, birth and family information, then gently examines your baby’s hips, movement and wider musculoskeletal development.

2. Ultrasound assessment

Your baby is positioned safely while ultrasound gel and a small probe are used to view the hip joints. Ultrasound uses sound waves and does not use X-rays.

3. Findings and plan

The doctor explains what has been seen and whether the hips appear mature, need monitoring, or require further specialist care.

Please do not delay an NHS referral. If your baby has already been referred through newborn screening, follow the timescale and advice you were given. A private enquiry should not replace urgent or scheduled NHS care.

Questions parents often ask

Ultrasound uses sound waves to create images and does not involve ionising radiation. The examination is non-invasive.
No. UK screening policy recommends physical hip examinations for all babies and targeted ultrasound when there are clinical findings or recognised risk factors. Parents may also contact us to discuss whether a private assessment is appropriate.
Timing depends on why the scan is needed, your baby’s gestational age and any findings on examination. Follow any referral advice already given and contact us promptly if you are concerned.
Some hips are simply immature and may develop normally with time, while other findings need monitoring or treatment. The doctor will explain the result and recommend the appropriate next step.

Dress your baby in clothing that is easy to remove from the waist down. Feeding and changing your baby shortly before the appointment may help them feel settled. Please bring any birth, screening or referral information you have.
